In order to promote unity in the community, and to honor the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Columbia Chorale performed with the Columbia Gospel Choir for a traditional gospel choir program.  Performance included the Columbia Chorale, the Columbia Youth Choirs, and the Columbia Gospel Choir.  The choirs performed in various combinations, culminating in a powerful unity with all three performing together and, of course, the audience joining in.

We lost an important artist on Monday (May 25th):  Photographer MARY ELLEN MARK died at age 75.  

Her name may or may not sound familiar, but many of her images, mainly of people all over the work taken as they live and capturing the intensity, drama, and humor that goes with it, will be recognized.  A few may be seen HERE.

She came up at a time when big, national magaizines (like LIFE and VANITY FAIR) needed and hired photographers.  Times have changed, but artists like Mark have continued.  

She likely came to the attention of most after photographing heroine addicts in London in the late 60s, and has since captured her vision of the human condition all over the world.  She published 18 books, and her exhibitions are almost countless.  Biographical material abounds.  

Mark did the photography for a 1983 LIFE magazine article about children on the streets of Seattle.  Following that, Mark worked with her husband, film maker and director Martin Bell, to do a documentary film that followed the lives of several homeless kids with whom Mark connected while shooting the LIFE magazine article.  The entire film STREETWISE can be seen on YouTube

These shots were from his (I think) last appearance in Columbia, Missouri as part of the “We Always Swing” Jazz Series.  He led a quintet with Terell Stafford, Rufus Reid, and other big names in November, 2008.  Take this as a reminder that the Jazz Series brings to Columbia a fantastic buffet of jazz greats every season – up-and-coming names, artists at the top of their careers, and legendary performers who were part of the core development of the art like Frank Wess.

Twenty-six year old Eldar Djangirov has been performing professionally since he was a teenager.  Raised largely in Kansas City since the age of 10, though originally from the former Soviet Union, Eldar was signed by Sony Masterworks at the age of 17, and was described by Dave Brubeck  as “a genius beyond most young people I’ve heard.”  Read more about him on his official website.

 

This was Eldar’s first “We Always Swing”® Jazz Series appearance.  With him was Armondo Gola on bass and percussionist Ludwig Afonso.
